SAFETY/SECURITY
The 2.2-mile course will be fully enclosed by a barrier & fence system widely used by street courses across the world. It’s comprised of a series of concrete blocks with a fence attached to the top. This temporary barrier system is approved by the FIA, the worldwide governing body of motorsports.
NASCAR and the City of Chicago together bring decades of extensive experience in safety planning, organizing, and executing hundreds of events annually. Collectively, and working closely with local and federal law enforcement, a comprehensive security plan will be developed based on the safety and success of the inaugural Street Race Weekend in 2023. Additionally, the course is completely secured during racing by a specialized barrier and fence system.
In conjunction with local, state, and national public safety officials, NASCAR has developed a comprehensive security plan in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department to ensure the safety of everyone associated with the Chicago Street Race and the general public in the area.
The city reminds the public to be aware of their surroundings and to report suspicious activity. If you notice something suspicious, notify onsite security or call 9-1-1. If You See Something, Say Something™ is a national anti-terrorism public awareness campaign that emphasizes the importance of reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.

GENERAL EVENT INFO
The Chicago Street Race is home to the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series street race in the 75-year history of NASCAR. Located in downtown Chicago, the 2024 event will once again take competitors past and through many of the city’s most renowned downtown landmarks on Michigan Avenue, South Columbus Drive, South DuSable Lake Shore Drive and the start-finish line near Buckingham Fountain. The Cup Series will be joined by the NASCAR Xfinity Series as part of a one-of-a-kind sports and entertainment festival with global music headliners including Keith Urban, The Chainsmokers, The Black Keys, and Lauren Alaina from July 6-7, 2024.
The NASCAR Chicago Street Race will take place on sections of streets that surround and are adjacent to Grant Park, specifically Columbus Drive, Jackson Boulevard, Michigan Avenue, Roosevelt Road, Balbo Drive, and DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
- Maintaining as much public access as possible to Grant Park during set-up and teardown for the race is a priority, and areas such as Buckingham Fountain, Butler Field and Lower Hutchinson Field will remain accessible for much of this time.
- Most of the course build will take place on curbs and areas of the Park without impeding residents’ use/access to the vast majority of the Park.
- It’s important to note that Millennium Park, Maggie Daley Park, and the Museum Campus, which are not part of the race/festival footprint, will remain open and accessible throughout.
- The Chicago Park District will prioritize public access during the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, keeping more than half of the park open during the event, including set-up and tear down.
- Access to popular park features like Buckingham Fountain, Butler Field, and Lower Hutchinson Field will remain accessible to the public with minimal restrictions that equate to less than one-fifth of event operation days.
- In addition, NASCAR will host free festival activities associated with the Chicago Street Race in Butler Field, inviting the public to join in the race week festivities and learn more about NASCAR without the price of admission. Maggie Daley Park, Cancer Survivor's Garden, and the Museum Campus will remain open and accessible throughout the event.
To honor the historic city of Chicago, the Cup Series race is named the Grant Park 165 and the NASCAR Xfinity Series race is The Loop 110. The Grant Park 165 will be a 165-mile race with 75 laps and The Loop 110 will be 50 laps with 110 miles. NASCAR adjusted the race lengths to allow for maximum daylight and to optimize for the television broadcast based on the inaugural Chicago Street Race.
- We’re committed to the city well beyond the race itself, including our NASCAR Chicago office with full-time staff to engage the community on a year-round basis through organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club, Chicago Public Schools, All Kids Bike, After School Matters, the Parks District, and other community-based organizations.
- NASCAR is committed to establishing and strengthening business relationships with diverse suppliers, both with the Chicago Street Race event and more broadly across the entire NASCAR business.
Race cars are projected to exceed 100 mph along several sections of the course’s straightaways, while other sections, such as turns and pit stops, will require significantly reduced speed.
NASCAR specializes in maintaining racing surfaces, including asphalt and other types of racing surfaces, for professional competition. As a sanctioned points race on the 2024 schedule, this event will be no different. NASCAR will work with the City of Chicago to make the necessary improvements and repairs to ensure the streets are suitable for racing and pedestrian use before the event weekend. NASCAR will be responsible for any necessary repairs required as a result of the race weekend following the event in order to return the Park space back to its pre-event condition.
- NASCAR has worked closely with the City of Chicago to develop a traffic plan that minimizes street closures while allowing this event to take place with the highest safety measures.
- The most significant of the temporary closures and detours will start Monday, July 1 and Monday, July 8.
- All businesses and residences will remain accessible throughout the race weekend.
- For a more detail outline of which streets will be impacted on which days, click the below button:
While the race cars will be going faster than normal vehicular traffic, the race cars slow considerably in the turns (of which there are 12 across the 2.2-mile course), thus minimizing wear and tear. A maximum of 40 race cars will compete during windows of on-track activity, compared to tens of thousands of cars that may pass through these areas during the same timeframe under normal circumstances.
NASCAR has worked hard to ensure that the weekend schedule reflects less than 10 hours total of “on-track” time over the two-day event. Race cars will not be on-track until 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6 and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 7. In addition, the NASCAR Cup Series cars will utilize mufflers for the Chicago Street Race, which successfully lowered sound levels by as much as 10 decibels at last year’s event.
The Chicago Street Race course is a 2.2-mile street circuit
- Saturday: The Loop 110 will feature the NASCAR Xfinity Series drivers and
- Sunday: Grant Park 165 will feature the NASCAR Cup Series drivers
